I am in favor of keeping The Star Spangle Banner as the national anthem. This comes from a lack of a better song, in my opinion. You say we might need a new anthem to better symbolize our country in the 21st century. How does adopting an almost equally old song, with the archaic word 'thee' in it do that? Also, Key didn't write the song two years after the battle, but the very next day, seeing as the Battle of Baltimore took place in September of 1814.
Back to the main point, TSSB is my choice of anthems because I feel it most accurately symbolizes our country. It is a story of freemen defending their nation and liberty in the face of long odds. The British had just captured Washington and burned the White House. Returning to the state of a British colony was at least a possibility at this point. However, the British were turned back at Baltimore and the rest is history. They rallied around our flag and possibly saved our country that night.
Other songs usually suggested to replace TSSB all lack the same American uniqueness and exceptionalism that should be present in our national anthem. 'America the Beautiful' sounds great, but it doesn't say anything special about America. America isn't special because of purple mountains or amber waves of grain. America is special because of its people with their dedication and willingness to defend liberty and freedom. I think 'God Bless America' is too overtly religious for a secular country like the USA, not to mention it once again says nothing about the individuality of America. The word America could be replaced in that song with almost any other nation on Earth and have the same effect in that country. 'My Country 'Tis of Thee', if all four stanzas are included is again too religious, especially when referring to God as our King.
Also, TSSB has too much momentum behind it to be changed. And last but not least, it has a much more powerful ending than any of the other songs, asking everyone if our flag still flies over the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Recently watched the latest series of In Treatment. We had to wait a bit to see it in the UK so I'd been avoiding reading any spoilers. The Sunil sessions were really interesting to watch. Whatever the character's motives were in the session, the therapist is not there to make any judgements or suggest they don't believe the client/patient. For Paul to get so ratty and emotional for being deceived is a slip-up for a therapist, but it fits with all the issues he's dealing with and his own demons. The one thing I'm a bit surprised at is that his supervisors/therapists aren't putting it to him he's a tad stressed and maybe needs time out as a therapist.
We don't always get to know what's happening to programmes that travel over from the US. I understand In Treatment has been axed, which is a shame.

It's not unlikely that the mom or aunt who is giving the Barbie as a present is sporting her own ink. Tattoos are a cultural marking, significant in the South Pacific, the US Navy, and jails, to name a few examples. They are increasingly common in the USA.

Debbie, I found you by way of a DailyKos post (I think - I've been on such a crazy blogging spree today that I'm not really sure where I found any of the many posts and threads I'm going on and on about, but I followed a link on About.com about Barack's Speech that led me to your book list from 2006 --which is kind of crazy, but there you are...and I liked your book list for Democrats very much. So, you're on my Facebook list now and I might actually take your list over to the Kos blog and add it to the Diary on Obama - if I can remember which one it was...

But the reason I'm commenting HERE is because I actually love this post about the guy who died playing golf. I recall from time to time one of the few times my being on a golf course had any meaning other than my searching for my wayward husband to come home and be with his family, but this day I was out with my baby and my son who is now 35 was a toddler. My husband was playing in a tournament, and he wasn't showing me off, but his son was the apple of his eye back then. (or one of them, anyway). I was standing around and noticed a very strange sound coming from beside me where a man was sitting slumped over a bit, and the sound I was hearing was a death rattle. Because I'd been an airline stewardess I immediately went into emergency operations mode and pulled out what I remembered of my training, yelled for help and we tried our best to save him. I felt so bad that we were not successful. I actually went to the funeral home of this man I did not even know, other than from my attempting badly to administer some pathetic form of aid...I actually took another CPR class after that experience.

I will never forget the wonderful way his wife greeted me and reassured me -- amazingly, she told me that he had had five previous heart attacks and in one of them he'd actually "seen that white light" and was ready to go.

I don't know anyone else that has ever experienced that, but I can say I've been as close as you can get to someone who has. And I do not fear death anymore. I don't necessarily have any religious reasons for it - I just envy anyone who slips into death without violence and pain and as much violent death as we've seen just in this year alone makes me not want to think about it in any other way.

We do need to learn to talk about death. My mother struggled under an oxygen tent in 1968 for her last breaths and my father called her name in a morphine fog in 1991 as he endured the pain that ended the agony of his life without her. And after his death I began to look at the evidence that pointed to the atomic blast that he experienced when I was two as the source of the cancer that killed them both. So I talk about death all the time. My whole life has been a story that starts with "My mother died when I was a senior in high school" and I'm still working on that book. It is a story for today. I've never felt ready until recently to completely put this book to rest and get on with other projects. I'd enjoy your comments as I work on it over at DailyKos where I blog as AlabamaLiberal or on Facebook.

Thanks for your lists and blogging. I've been blogging off and on since 2003 when Salon.com first started offering free blogs. Heady days, those. I bet you were around back then as well...

Too many adults still do not understand a younger girl's play and the whole process behind Barbie's legendary popularity. Suggest that all of you get down on the floor with your daughters, nieces, neighbors; and emmerse yourselves, not merely observe, in the Barbie experience. Most importantly, you will realise the goal is not to imitate; but to expand imagination, creating a fictional world where these women plan for places to go, what they will do, and which outfits to wear or pack for their make believe adventures. Your girls don't insert themselves into the roles, rather create a world of possibilities as in a show on TV, but act as the director. Many parents pushed the American Girls figures as more realistic. The ugliest part of that passing fad was a bit of class warfare, due to the unreasonable price of the dolls and accessories. Add the improbability of girls from different eras interacting or having any common ground. Tatoos have become commonplace; a plastic figure, who doesn't wear a bra or panties, is unlikely to inspire our girls to have tatoos of their own. . .Barbie has already played that out and is more likely to fit right in with Barbie's ski suit. Check it out. It is pure fantasy.

Grazie per essere vissuto nella mia epoca. Sarò folle e affamato.
